PROJECTS / Housing
This new-build, 8-storey student housing scheme is made up of 124 studio bedrooms with an internal atrium between ground and first floor connecting several communal facilities, such as a gym and games/TV area and cafe. In addition two retail units are located along the northern elevation on the ground floor.
The site is located next to the University of Portsmouth’s Creative Arts Faculty and regenerates a plot that has been derelict for many years. The internal finish is contemporary and designed to a high specification and room types include single, double and deluxe studios.
Load-bearing masonry is the predominant external material, which is articulated with horizontal and vertical bands creating a balanced grid. A different brick type is used to accentuate the grid from the brick panels, this along with the rotated stretcher bond feature panels between the windows brings depth and richness within a simple palette of materials.
The subservient rendered east and west elevations are set back from the line of the brickwork part of the building to accentuate the overall building massing. The scheme is aiming to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 generally and Code 5 for Energy.
The project is currently on site.
