My name is Tom Wildbore, I am a Passivhaus Designer and Head of Sustainability at Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt.
Sustainability has always been something I am very interested in, but I think one of the drivers for me is that connectivity between the buildings we design, the materials that go into them, and the environment they are in. It’s the physics; it’s the environmental aspect of it. Actually, there is an emerging field now where natural materials are really coming back to the top. There is a huge amount of culture in that as well. We are resurrecting history with the way we used to do things in buildings. That, for me, is one of the most exciting parts of the industry to be involved in.
We are very focused on energy efficiency at the moment, and, in tandem with that, the ‘healthy homes’ conversation which addresses health and wellbeing in housing. It can be quite doom and gloom, but we must pivot our way of talking to include the opportunities as well. We have to make it a really positive conversation.
The CSET (Client Sustainability Engagement Toolkit) is a tool and process that emerged from our internal review of projects. We realised there was merit in bringing our clients into these conversations. Then by offering that as a service – a light touch review – we have begun to engage in discussions that we did not think were possible. So, for instance, we might find out that our clients hadn’t appreciated that x or y was worth doing, or that it was something our team could deliver, or the building could incorporate. Or even, the client wanted something but they weren’t sure it was the right time to talk about it. This is all really positive because, ultimately, it leads us to more sustainable outcomes simply by discussing it earlier than we used to.
However, we have to embed this, everyone should be doing this and we have to make it normal. I would encourage other practices to go out there and find the answers yourself… because they are out there.
I feel like we are at a bit of a fork in the road and it is incredibly exciting if we take the right avenue.
