Hi, I’m Eloise, and I’m a newly qualified architect at Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt.
I like designing pretty things – and loving working on projects in the education sector. It’s a real challenge, but I think it also gives a level of creativity to design spaces that can be inspiring and link people to the wider world. So that’s very rewarding, especially when you get that connection with clients. Not just clients but the wider stakeholder team too. For instances, speaking with teachers and students, you can learn so much about what makes them tick. From there, it’s about marrying up their desire with our design. The decisions that you take affect how people are going to live their day-to-day lives.
Last month at Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt, we hosted a Roundtable event – inviting other industry professionals and experts from different disciplines to come and chat to us. The purpose was to exchange ideas on adaptive reuse of buildings in the 20th century.
Within the debate – and with specific regard to listed buildings – we came away from the day agreed that it feels like an opportunity rather than a restraint. If you compare Post-War to Georgian or Tudor architecture, people say: ‘now that’s a heritage building; that’s beautiful.’ Whereas, in 50 or 100 years, people will be looking back at that post-war era as the heritage buildings. These buildings are the heritage of the future. And so, we need to be careful about how we protect and celebrate that. And more generally, our Roundtable was great for my personal development.
Recently, we were involved in a bid for LSE. We were taking a beautiful heritage building in the centre of London and using it to create a student hub for their university. We looked at that sequence through the centre, to think how we could really open up the space.
There were, of course, many challenges working with the existing building. But we were able to put lots of heads together to come up with a really exciting and bold approach.
And that’s just recently. There is a hugely interesting range of projects that we’re able to get involved with here. That was part of the draw of coming to Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt.
