GREAT WESTERN HOTEL
Mixed-use scheme receives planning
9 June 2022
We’re delighted to report that this project local to our Hampshire studio has been granted unanimous approval at planning committee.
The aspiration for the scheme is to reinvigorate a currently vacant site located within the conservation area of ‘South View’ in Basingstoke. The Great Western Hotel and the ‘Livery and Bait’ stable building to the rear, while not being grade listed, are locally listed buildings of importance within the local area.
Plans for the site include a new residential development containing twelve units, the remodelling of the existing former hotel to accommodate a restaurant and four residential homes, as well as associated external works.
The material approach for the scheme takes cues from the existing building and local context. A textured brickwork matching the existing building is the principle material proposed for the new residential block, complimented with metal cladding.
A key consideration in the design was the site’s proximity to Basingstoke Railway Station; the central location providing a great opportunity for a low energy, low carbon development promoting a ‘people first’ approach whereby a significant percentage of journeys by future occupants will be made by foot, cycle, bus or train.
